Poetry Friday: “At the Beach”
Today’s poem comes from Naomi Shihab Nye’s collection This Same Sky: A Collection of Poems from Around the World. This book is one of my favorites. Nye recognized the need for a collection of poems from many cultures, accessible to students. So through her travels internationally to schools, poems were gathered for this collection.
I choose “At the Beach” by Kemal Ozer, Turkey, because that’s where I was supposed to be this weekend. However, I am staying home to nurse a cold/allergies. I hate being “older and wiser”. At a younger age, I would plug along and go anyway. Now I know that to go will deprive me of rest, the key ingredient for getting over it sooner than later.
At the Beach
The waves are erasing footprints
Of those who are walking the beach.
The wind is carrying away the words
Two people are saying to each other.
But still they are walking the beach
Their feet making new footprints.
Still the two are talking together
Finding new words.
