Poetry Friday: Student Poetry Group
I posted about the poetry club last April. Students in grades one through four met ten to twelve hours either after school or on two Saturdays. Poems written, books created and a time to share with parents. Poof. We were done until next spring.
Why not have a poetry group meet all year? And how without staying school after all year?. My schedule this year is such that Thursdays is a wide open day. Tah-Dah! Poetry Thursday Lunch Bunch could be a possibility. Would students want to give up their lunch time? To write poetry?
Yes, they do. I invited last spring’s students to meet with me yesterday. They showed up eager to write. We wrote a group poem, inspired by “where does poetry hide” in Georgia Heard’s book, Awakening the Heart.
POETRY HIDES
Poetry hides
In the wind that roars
In the misty rain that falls on me
In the storm that comes close
I don’t worry, it is poetry to me
Poetry hides
In magic mirrors, Narnia snow,
Rapid rivers, brooks, and streams,
Even in your dreams or sunbeams,
In time
Poetry hides
In the library, books all around
In the mouth with all the words
In old pictures and words
In your heart forever
Poetry hides
In the cloudy softness of my rabbit’s fur
In the heart of the beast
In the soft colored sand
In the heart of the ocean
Poetry hides in the core of the world.
By the Poetry Thursday Poets: Second grade: Jenna, Alison, Clare, Ashlyn, Third grade: Jasmin Fourth grade: Denae, Alyssa, Makayla, Sabrina, Fifth grade: Sophia, Courtney
More poets will be invited. In fact, I already have a fifth grader who wants to come and wasn’t in the group last spring. Besides having fun, I hope they will create a “savings’ account” of poems. Their poems will be the Poetry Friday feature the first Friday of every month.

THIS is a neat idea, and what a great thing in which to be involved all year long!

Wonderful poem, Jone, and a truly wonderful idea!!

I’d love to steal this idea, maybe at school, maybe as a kids-in-the-neighborhood project. I love it.
Poetry hides in the core of the world, indeed…

“Their poems will be the Poetry Friday feature the first Friday of every month.” Yeah! Today’s was so good that I can’t wait to see more.
And I would have LOVED to be in a Poetry Lunch bunch at my school growing up. I still remember the first time I wrote a “real” poem at school—not for class, but while I was daydreaming— and that powerful feeling of connecting with something has never left me. You’re doing a good, good thing, there, MsMac.

This is fabulous! I love the excitement – it comes through in your posts. No poetry hiding there, it’s wide open!

Jone, what a grand idea–and a fabuloso poem.

Jone,
Great poem selection. I also love Naomi Shihab Nye’s ” A Valentine for Ernest Mann.”
I have a friend who teaches third grade in Massachusetts. Ever since we attended the Favorite Poem Project’s First Summer Poetry Institute for Teachers, he’s been running a poetry club for students at his school. It became so popular that he now receives a stipend for doing it. He’s a great teacher–and poet! We get together a few times a year to critique each other’s writing.
I think it’s wonderful to see kids getting excited about poetry. Keep up the good work!!!
BTW, I wrote a potato pancake poem for you and Eisha that I posted at Wild Rose Reader last week. here’s the URL:

Wow! I know you have already heard this, but what a great idea. I am currently taking a grad course and it deals with Blogs and learning to get students involved. I do a great deal of writing within my classroom and I am always looking for new ideas to expand. Part of my class is to search Blogs and to find an interesting one that could inspire lessons in your own classroom. Your site has my wheels spinning and I’m thinking of getting my students involved in a similar manner. This is all new to me but with some patience and practice I think there lies some neat possibilities.
Thanks for the Ideas,
Andrew
