Poetry Friday: Ms M.Padden/Ms Morshige’s Class
Back in October, Naomi Shihab Nye suggested to write 3-5 observations per day to exercise your writing muscle. This past month, I have been working with two fifth grade classes in poetry using this suggestion.
For three weeks, I went in every day to model writing in my journal and to share a daily poem. Soon they were asking when are we going to write poetry? This past week, the students have been writing poems. I am sharing one class today and next week, I will share the other class.
Frost Fall
wind walks down my spine as I walk through the
grass which seems like shards of frost. As I walk
memories are lost in the wind. The clouds are
catching dreams. The dragonfly glides through the
sky. The sun comes to spature all of these things.
Rain drops. As I walk it guards the clouds. Silver
flakes falls. As I walk they are the crystals of life.
A blanket of snow lies over the ground. It puts spring to
sleep.
–Brandon, 5th Grade
The sky
Looking out the window,
The sky coming to touch the soft soil of the earth
Every step you take one more inch through the fog
The trees look like giant running after me as I sit in the car,
The
Trees
Follow
Me
Cutting through the fog like butter,
The sky to the earth the only time you can see
In your eye
The sky
–Dakotah, 5th grade
Chills run
down my back
Outside
grey as a rock
my hair looks like
It has
shredded crystals
In it
I look up…SNOW
“Snow is coming down”
I tell
the crowd as sticking
out my tongue trying
To catch
Snowflakes in my mouth
I hear a loud GULP
NOOO the snow is gone
YAY Spring is here!!!
–Kierra, 5th grade
